See/Hear/Mean? Jezreel 1
From Jack's talk this morning… What did you see? In scripture that was fresh or new? What did you hear? From Jack that you want to comment on or question? What does it mean? In your own city, life and/or ministry? Jack is a man of deep reflection and intensity. He clearly believes passionately what he says. The poor are a vital part of the city. If we do not address the poor in our work we have missed our goal. Jack has lived with the poor. This seems to have set him apart. Can your life be shaped like that without living with the poor? If it can't, can we go to the poor or do they come to us. God's idea for heaven on earth is integrated communities for rich and poor. What can I do to create an integrated society? In Knoxville they have a thirty year vision statement for the city that mentions this integration of neighborhoods. I'm interested in the political implications of what Jack has said. What are we doing politically to prevent what has caused these needs. The World Evangelical Alliance has an initiative called Micah Challenge which refers to UN Resolutions. I'm curious for Jack's thoughts about the political implications of this. Our traditional view of evangelism often does not touch on society. In San Diego, there was an article about the symbiosis of San Diego and Tijuana. How do you see change in this reality? The whole world is connected, how do you cause change in a connected world. Is capitalism as an economic model that is viable? Fernando de Soto says that it works through exploitation? Can you have economics of equality in a capitalistic system? In the Old Testament system the law was never written on their hearts? Can we get to hearts? The poor will remain "the poor" in our minds until they have faces and names. When they have faces and names it changes our perspective. Our culture has a history of injustice and we need to address and recognize that. How do we do justice? Jim Wallis wrote an op-ed about the failure of welfare reform, yet others would say that it worked. What is justice? I saw parallels with Jack and a message by Tim Keller on justice and how seriously God takes it. Bill Jobs is an example of a someone redeeming a capitalistic system. He's taking a for profit company to address the needs of the city. It was an apologetic for the inspiration of Scripture because who writes something that limits their own power. Poverty of the poor is their curse. It's the inability to break the cycle of poverty. God has given to people of faith the responsibility to help people out of the curse. Howard Schultz (Pour Your Heart Into It) wrote about Starbucks and how he determined to give people jobs with dignity. The poor will always will be with us, but they shouldn't be the same poor. It's clear in the Old Testament that the system is designed for an expanding economy. There is a bias toward cities because land can only be divided so much. The Covenant is the only document that has faith in an expanding economy. What about other religions contribution and people of good will? We have to find a way of working together. Micro enterprises leader Dr. Yunus is an example of the contribution of people of good will If we don't the stones will cry out. We can partner with some in each area of justice.
